Contract Modification

Definition

A Contract Modification is a written change to contract terms and conditions. Modifications may be unilateral (signed only by the contracting officer) or bilateral (signed by both parties). They can add funding, change scope, extend periods, exercise options, or administratively update contract information.

Modifications are numbered sequentially and become part of the contract. Only contracting officers have authority to issue modifications. Contractors should ensure they have written modifications before proceeding with changed work to ensure legal entitlement to additional compensation. All modifications should be carefully reviewed for their full impact on contract terms.
